How to Block Adult Content on iPhone (All Apps & Safari)

Six steps that cover every adult-content surface on iPhone: Safari filter, App Store gate, social app NSFW toggles, search engine SafeSearch, account-change lock.

Blocking adult content on iPhone means covering more surfaces than just Safari. This guide walks the settings that catch adult sites in Safari, the App Store gates that stop 17+ apps from being installed, and the social-app-side controls (Reddit, X, image-search) that most guides skip. If you follow every section, an iPhone stops being a delivery mechanism for adult content.

What “adult content” means in Screen Time

Apple’s Limit Adult Websites setting uses a category list Apple maintains. It covers most porn sites, adult tube sites, and known adjacent content — but it doesn’t cover: user-generated NSFW on Reddit, adult content on X (Twitter), image-search thumbnails, or in-app previews from most third-party apps. Those need their own settings, per surface. Turning on Web Content is step one; steps two through six cover the rest.

Blocking adult content on iPhone — the six steps

Step 1

Turn on Limit Adult Websites in Safari

Open Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Content Restrictions → Web Content, then choose Limit Adult Websites. Safari now shows a “You cannot browse this page” interstitial for sites in Apple’s adult category. Use the Always Allow and Never Allow lists on the same screen to explicitly permit a health-education site the broad filter caught, or explicitly block a specific adult site that keeps slipping through.

Step 2

Delete other browsers, then block Installing Apps

Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge, DuckDuckGo, Arc, and any privacy-focused browser you have installed do not honor Screen Time’s Web Content filter. Delete them. Then, on the same Content & Privacy Restrictions screen, open iTunes & App Store Purchases and set Installing Apps to Don’t Allow. Without this, a re-installed Chrome is a search away from defeating the entire filter.

Step 3

Restrict what the App Store surfaces

Under Content Restrictions → Apps, choose an age rating: 17+ is the sensible ceiling for adults (it excludes explicit adult games and dating apps); 12+ is more restrictive if that fits your situation. This gates what the App Store will show and install. On the same menu, set Books to Clean, Music, Podcasts & News to Clean, and TV Shows to age-appropriate.

Step 4

Turn on the built-in NSFW controls in Reddit, X, TikTok, Instagram

Screen Time can’t reach INSIDE a third-party app to filter content. What it CAN do is stop the app from being installed in the first place (see Step 2). If you keep the app installed, each has its own NSFW setting:
  • Reddit: Settings → Adult Content → “Enable adult content” OFF. Then Settings → NSFW → SFW mode ON. Per-account; make sure you’re signed in.
  • X (Twitter): Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Content you see → “Display media that may contain sensitive content” OFF. Also under Search Settings, turn on “Hide sensitive content.”
  • TikTok: Profile → Settings → Content preferences → Restricted Mode ON. Imperfect but reduces suggestive content noticeably.
  • Instagram: Settings → Suggested content → set to Less, and turn off “Show sensitive content” in the Reels & Explore section.

Step 5

Force SafeSearch in Google & Bing at the account level

Google Images and Bing Images can slip past category filters — a search-results page isn’t itself categorized as adult, so its rendered thumbnails go through.
  1. Sign into your Google account on the phone. Go to google.com/preferences → SafeSearch → “Filter” → save. This locks SafeSearch to your Google account, not just to the current browser session.
  2. For Bing: on bing.com/account/general → SafeSearch → “Strict.” Bing lets an admin (or the user) lock this at the account level.
  3. DuckDuckGo respects a per-search “safe search” toggle only; there’s no server-side lock. If SafeSearch enforcement matters, don’t use DuckDuckGo as your default search engine.

Step 6

Block Account Changes (closes the swap-Apple-ID escape)

Under Content & Privacy Restrictions, set Account Changes to Don’t Allow. Without this, someone holding the phone can sign out of the current Apple ID and sign in with a different one that has none of these restrictions — bypassing everything above in about a minute. This is a critical step and easy to miss.

The one setting that makes it stick

Every setting in the six steps above is enforced by the Screen Time passcode. If the person configuring these restrictions knows the passcode, they can flip everything back on demand. That’s fine for a parent-child setup. It’s the failure mode of every adult self-restriction attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Does Screen Time block adult content in all apps?
Screen Time's Web Content filter only reaches Safari and Safari-based views. It cannot filter what's inside a third-party app's own feed. To block adult content in Reddit, X, TikTok, or Instagram, you either delete the app (and block app installs) or use each app's own NSFW toggle — which is user-controllable.
How do I block adult content in Reddit and X on iPhone?
Reddit: Settings → Adult Content → Enable adult content OFF, and NSFW → SFW mode ON. X: Settings and Privacy → Content You See → 'Display media that may contain sensitive content' OFF, and Hide sensitive content in Search Settings ON. Both settings are per-account and can be toggled off in seconds.
Why do image searches still show adult thumbnails?
Because the search-results page itself isn't categorized as adult by Apple's filter, its rendered thumbnails go through. Lock SafeSearch at the account level (google.com/preferences → SafeSearch → Filter → Save while signed in) rather than per-session.
Does deleting Safari block adult content everywhere?
You can't delete Safari on iPhone — it's a system app. Even if you could, blocking Safari wouldn't help: other apps use Safari-based views internally. Better to keep Safari and enable Limit Adult Websites, which filters the entire WebKit surface.
