How to Block Porn on X (Twitter) on iPhone

X allows adult content and shows it by default to logged-in adults. Here's the in-app fix, plus the delete-and-lock option for when in-app isn't enough.

X (Twitter) is one of the most common places NSFW content shows up on a locked-down phone, because X allows adult content on the platform and shows it by default to logged-in adult accounts. Blocking porn on X takes two toggles inside the app and — if X is a repeat surface for you — the delete-and-block-installs move at the iOS level.

Turn off sensitive content in X

X labels adult content as “sensitive media.” Two settings control whether it shows up in your feed and searches:

Step 1

Turn off sensitive media in the timeline

X app → tap your profile → Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Content you see. Untick Display media that may contain sensitive content. This blurs sensitive images and videos in your regular timeline.

Step 2

Hide sensitive content in search

Same Content you see menu → Search settings → tick Hide sensitive content. Now searches also filter sensitive results.

Step 3

Turn off explore recommendations

X app → Settings and privacy → Notifications → Filters → mute keywords you don’t want to see. Then Settings and privacy → Explore Settings → uncheck Show content in this location if the local-trends surface is a problem for you.

The in-app browser leak

X has a built-in web view for tapping external links. Depending on iOS version and X’s current implementation, links opened from that in-app browser may not honor Safari’s Web Content filter — so a tweeted link to an adult site can load through X even if it would be blocked in regular Safari.

Two fixes:

  • X app → Settings and privacy → Display and sound → Use in-app browser → OFF. Now external links open in Safari where the Web Content filter applies.
  • Or delete X entirely (next section).

Delete X and block installs

If X is a repeat problem, the durable answer isn’t another in-app toggle — it’s removing X from the phone and blocking its reinstall at the iOS level.

Step 1

Delete the X app

Long-press the X icon → Remove App → Delete App.

Step 2

Block Installing Apps

Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases → Installing Apps → Don’t Allow. X is now locked out of reinstall.

Step 3

Add x.com and twitter.com to Never Allow

Even without the app, x.com in Safari can display sensitive content if you’re signed in. Add x.com, twitter.com, and mobile.twitter.com under Screen Time → Web Content → Never Allow. Safari refuses to load those domains until the entries are removed.

Softer option: App Limits

If deleting X entirely is more restrictive than you need, Screen Time’s App Limits let you cap X usage per day (e.g. 15 minutes). It’s not a block — it’s a nudge — but it’s a middle ground. Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit → Social → Twitter/X → set your daily minutes.

Same passcode gate applies: App Limits can be extended with the Screen Time passcode. If you can override the limit yourself in three taps, it’s a suggestion.

Making it durable

Bottom line

X’s in-app sensitive-content toggles + turning off the in-app browser handles the moderate case. For the “X is a repeat surface” case, delete the app, block Installing Apps, and add the domains to Never Allow. To make any of this last more than a day, the Screen Time passcode has to be one you can’t recover.
